Nadine Nakanishi joins the United States Artists as the designer in residence for the inaugural position. Born in California to immigrant parents and spending her youth in Switzerland, her multicultural background (Swiss/American/Japanese) has shaped her understanding of the modern world and its intricacies. Upon adulthood, she chose to explore those intricacies in the field of the graphic arts. She studied graphic design and type design in Switzerland then relocated to Chicago in 2004, where she established a collaborative graphic arts practice called Sonnenzimmer with her partner, Nick Butcher. Her work is in permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Department of Architecture and Design; Newberry Library, Chicago; The Arts Club of Chicago, Chicago; Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, Plakatsammlung, Zürich, Switzerland; Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany; Museum of Modern Art, Artist Book Collection, New York City, NY; Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis, MN; Facebook, Headquarters, Menlo Park, CA, to name a few. She has held talks / performances at Aalto University, Helsinki; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago; The Arts Club of Chicago, Chicago; Graphisches Forum Zürich, Switzerland; Vebikus Kunsthalle Schaffhausen, Switzerland. She views the graphic arts as a corner stone for understanding the arts and our times.
